What is “oer-Hollandse appeltaart”?
The oer-Hollandse appeltaart (“original Dutch apple pie”) is a tall, deep-dish apple pie made with a butter pastry, a generous filling of Goudreinet or Elstar apples, raisins, cinnamon, and lemon zest, topped with a lattice or lid. It’s the Netherlands' default birthday cake, koffievisite dessert, and tourist-cafe specialty. Distinct from American and French apple pies in proportion and depth: Dutch appeltaart is built tall in a springvorm, can stand alone slice-by-slice without collapsing, and is served with slagroom on the side. Famous Amsterdam serves include Winkel 43 in the Jordaan, with lines around the block on weekends.
In this clip, a Dutch presenter walks through the recipe: “Oer-Hollandse appeltaart. Bloem. Boter. Eieren erbij.”
