💡 Víš, že…?

What does “half 8” mean in Dutch?

half 8
Dutch clock shortcut
7:30 — Dutch “half” points forward to the coming hour, not back past the last one

In Dutch, half followed by an hour means thirty minutes before that hour — the opposite of English. So half 8 is 7:30, not 8:30: you are halfway toward eight, not halfway past it. English looks back (“half past seven”); Dutch looks ahead (“half eight”). This one flip applies to every half-hour on the clock, so learning it once unlocks the whole system.

In the clip, the speaker says “Om half 8 neem ik de bus” — “At half eight I take the bus,” meaning the 7:30 bus. The same logic runs through the quarters: kwart voor 8 (a quarter to eight, 7:45) and kwart over 7 (a quarter past seven, 7:15). Dutch also builds compound times around the half-hour: vijf over half 8 means five past 7:30, so 7:35 — a system that takes a little practice but starts with understanding that half + hour = 30 minutes before.
