What does the German prefix “Ersatz-” mean?

Ersatz-
German substitute-word prefix
“backup/spare/substitute,” attachable to almost any noun

When a friend’s planned outfit for a triple date turns out to be identical to someone else’s, her backup plan is exactly the same too — her Ersatzkleidung (“spare clothing”) doesn’t save the situation. Ersatz means substitute or replacement, and it’s one of German’s most productive prefixes: stick it in front of almost any noun and you get “backup ___” — Ersatzspieler (substitute player), Ersatzteil (spare part), Ersatzfahrer (replacement driver).

The prefix is transparent enough that native speakers coin new Ersatz- compounds on the spot without anyone finding it strange — Ersatzhandy (backup phone), Ersatzschlüssel (spare key). It’s a genuinely useful pattern for learners: once you know “Ersatz,” you can describe “the backup one” for almost any object without reaching for a dictionary.
