What does “Greifen Sie zu” mean in German?

German shops and market announcements often close with Greifen Sie zu — literally “reach in and grab,” but used as a hospitable nudge meaning “go ahead, help yourself, snap it up.” The phrase comes from zugreifen: greifen (to grasp) plus the prefix zu-, which closes the action toward you. It is friendlier and more inviting than a plain kaufen Sie and signals that the deal is too good to pass up.

In this supermarket listening exercise, a PA-style voice lists fresh produce — beans, papaya, and German apples — then seals the announcement with Greifen Sie zu. You will hear the same phrase at outdoor markets (Greifen Sie ruhig zu! — “feel free to help yourself”) and in written sale adverts (Jetzt zugreifen! — “grab it now”). The verb zugreifen also works figuratively: Der Preis war unschlagbar, also hab ich gleich zugegriffen means “the price was unbeatable, so I jumped on it straight away.”
