What does “기가 막히다” mean in Korean?
기가 막히다 literally says your 기 — your life-energy or breath — has been blocked, leaving you momentarily speechless. Koreans use it both ways: 기가 막히게 맛있다 means “unbelievably delicious,” but 기가 막히다 about someone’s behaviour means “outrageous, I can’t even.” Same words, opposite feelings — tone and what follows tell you whether it’s awe or disbelief.
막히다 on its own means “to be blocked” (a clogged drain, a jammed road), and 기 is the flowing inner energy of East Asian thought — so the image is your energy stopping dead. The food reaction here, 기가 막히네 (“this is incredible”), is the warm version. Flip the tone and 기가 막혀서 말이 안 나온다 means “I’m so dumbfounded I’m lost for words.” Listen for 기가 막히게 + adjective as the all-purpose “amazingly ___.”
