What does “ci mancherebbe” mean in Italian?
Ci mancherebbe is one of the warmest ways to say “you’re welcome” in Italian — but it’s not a simple “no problem.” It’s short for ci mancherebbe altro, literally “anything else would be lacking,” meaning of course I helped you; not helping would have been unthinkable. It turns a favour from a choice into something obvious between people who care, and it works in both polite and casual settings.
You’ll hear it answering thanks (Grazie! — Ci mancherebbe!) and also brushing off an apology — “don’t even mention it.” Among close friends it pairs up as Ma figurati, ci mancherebbe! Built from the verb mancare (“to be missing/lacking”), it’s that generous Italian move of insisting the kindness was simply expected — never a burden.
