What does “arukh” mean in Hebrew?

A mom watches her son turn the kitchen into a slime lab and protests with rising drama: «המטבח הזה לא ערוך לסליים... החיים לא ערוכים לסליים» (“this kitchen isn’t set up for slime... life isn’t set up for slime”). ערוך (arukh) means “set up, prepared, laid out, ready for.”

A set table is a שולחן ערוך, which is also the name of Judaism’s classic law code, the “Set Table.” The same root gives לערוך (“to arrange, to edit, to hold an event”) and עורך (“an editor”). The comedy here rides on stretching ערוך from a messy kitchen all the way to life itself.
