What does 功夫茶 (gōngfu chá) mean in Chinese?

功夫茶 (gōngfu chá)
Chinese tea culture term
“gongfu tea” — slow, skilled brewing; the 功夫 here means skill, time, and effort, not martial arts

功夫 (gōngfu) is famous in the West as “kung fu” — martial arts. But the word’s older, broader meaning is “skill acquired through time and effort.” 功夫茶 (gōngfu chá) is tea brewed with that same patient discipline: small teapot, tiny cups, multiple short infusions, and full attention to the process. The clip glosses it simply as “功夫的意思就是时间” (“gongfu means time”), though the fuller sense is skill, effort, and craft as much as time.

The ritual shown in the clip follows the classic steps: warming the teapot (温杯), adding tea leaves, a quick first rinse pour discarded (洗茶, “washing the tea”), then the proper brew timed to colour. The presenter notes that the golden-yellow liquid (金黄色的茶汤) of a well-brewed red tea is part of the experience — you look, smell, and then taste, just as one 品酒 (tastes wine). 功夫茶 is associated with Fujian and the Chaoshan region of Guangdong, where the gongfu brewing style developed, and remains closely tied to oolong and red teas today.
