What does 随便 (suíbiàn) mean in Chinese?

随便 (suíbiàn) literally means “follow convenience,” but in practice it does three very different things. It can mean “I have no preference” when someone asks what you want to eat. It can mean “help yourself, feel free” when a guest arrives. And said with a cold tone, it means “do whatever, I don’t care” — the Chinese equivalent of a dismissive shrug. The same two syllables, three entirely different moods.

The clip demonstrates the word naturally during a supermarket trip: the presenter can’t be bothered choosing between carrot bags, so she picks at random — “随便拿两袋吧，随便选两袋胡萝卜就好了.” She then summarises the two meanings directly: first, 不挑都可以 (“no preference, anything goes”); and second (cut off in the clip), the more loaded sense of “feel free to do as you wish.” Misreading the register is a real pitfall — 随便 as a reply to “what do you want for dinner?” can sound passive-aggressive if your tone is flat.
