💡 Víš, že…?

What does “崩溃” (bēngkuì) mean in Chinese?

崩溃 (bēngkuì)
Mandarin internet-era emotion word
to collapse, fall apart, or have an emotional meltdown — the go-to word when pressure becomes too much

崩溃 (bēngkuì) originally described the physical collapse of a structure, but in modern spoken Chinese it is the standard way to express emotional breakdown or complete overwhelm. 我快崩溃了 (“I’m about to fall apart”) is as common in group chats as it is in face-to-face conversation. A popular internet saying captures its everyday weight: 成年人的崩溃只在一瞬间 — “an adult’s collapse happens in an instant.”

In the clip, a teacher recounts a student who felt 压力很大 (yālì hěn dà, “under a lot of pressure”) because his parents always said he wasn’t working hard enough — 这让他很崩溃 (“this made him崩溃”). The teacher’s own solution? Buy a 榴梿 (liúlián, durian) — a fruit her mother finds repulsive — and tell her mom: 你快吃啊,又不会毒死你 (“go on, eat it, it won’t kill you”). The reversal works; the pressure stops. The clip also contains 报复 (bàofù, revenge) and 压力 (yālì, pressure/stress) — both high-frequency A2 words that pair naturally with 崩溃.
