What does “阴天” (yīntiān) mean in Chinese?

阴天 (yīntiān) means an overcast or cloudy day — specifically one where the sky is a flat sheet of grey with no sun visible. The word pairs naturally with its opposite 晴天 (qíngtiān), a clear sunny day. What makes 阴 worth noticing is that it is the exact same character as in 阴阳 (yīnyáng): shadow, hidden, cool, the dark half. So 阴天 is literally “the yin sky” — the sunless side.
