What does “الفسحة” mean in Arabic?

Arabic schools run on a tight pair of words: الحصة (al-ḥiṣṣa) is the lesson period — literally a “portion” of allocated time — and الفسحة (al-fusḥa) is the break between lessons, rooted in the idea of open space and freedom. The two look similar on the page but point in opposite directions: one pins you to your chair, the other lets you go. Both words appear constantly in school-age Arabic.

In the clip, a sleepy student tries to escape الحصة by stuffing a balloon inside his school uniform to look like he is still sitting at his desk — then slips away during الفسحة. His plan falls apart when he wanders back into the same classroom and the class erupts in laughter. The comic confusion between the two words mirrors the beginner’s challenge: الحصة (with ح) is the structured, allocated slot; الفسحة (with ف) is the open, roomy break. Notice also the root: فسح (f-s-ḥ) gives words for spaciousness, ample room, and breathing space — الفسحة is literally the “wide-open moment” in the school day.
