What does “ya nahār abyaḍ” mean in Egyptian Arabic?

When Egyptians are hit by something shocking or wonderful, they reach for يا نهار أبيض — literally “oh, what a white day!” Arabic maps colour onto fortune: a white day is a bright, lucky one, and invoking it is how Egyptian Arabic turns raw astonishment into language. It works exactly where English would say “oh my goodness” or “oh wow,” but carries the vivid image of daylight flooding in.

The phrase anchors a whole colour pair: يا نهار أسود (ya nahār aswad), “oh, what a black day!”, is its counterpart for bad news or horror. Together they show how Egyptian Arabic reaches for daylight imagery rather than the divine (“oh my God”) that English defaults to. The clip opens with يا نهار ابيض the moment the narrator introduces the girl who was thrown out of her family home and decided to build her own cosy little room — the exclamation sets the tone of disbelieving delight at her independence.
