What does “عفريت” (afreet) mean in Egyptian Arabic?

عفريت (ʿafrīt) is Egypt’s go-to word for a demon or jinn — but it lives far beyond ghost stories. Egyptians reach for it whenever something or someone seems frighteningly powerful, wildly mischievous, or just plain creepy. A terror of a toddler? ʿafrīt. An intimidating boss? ʿafrīt. A spider on the wall? Very much ʿafrīt. The word stretches from genuine supernatural dread all the way to affectionate exasperation.

The root ʿ-f-r carries the sense of “rebellious” and “strong,” and عفريت appears once in the Quran (27:39) as an epithet for a particularly powerful jinn. In Egyptian daily speech it long ago slipped its mythological moorings: calling a clever, energetic child an ʿafrīt is almost a compliment.
