Low key is a Gen Z and millennial American English softener. It started as music-and-fashion slang for “subtle, understated,” then turned into an everyday hedge that means “sort of, kind of, a little bit.” Americans now drop it in front of feelings: low key tired, low key obsessed, low key worried. The opposite is high key (“very, openly”). The phrase exploded on TikTok in the late 2010s and is now standard among American teens, college students, and young adults.
