Why do American kids say “stealed” instead of “stole”?

Young English-speaking children often say words like stealed instead of stole, goed instead of went, and runned instead of ran. This is not a mistake to fix: it’s a normal stage in learning English. Most English verbs add -ed for the past (walked, jumped), and kids start by guessing this rule for every verb, even the irregular ones. Researchers call this overregularization.
