What does “mullir” mean in Spanish?

Mullir is the precise little verb for plumping a cushion or pillow back to softness: you punch and shake it until it turns esponjoso (spongy) again. It comes from Latin mollire, “to soften,” the same root behind “mollify.” Most learners reach for arreglar or sacudir and never meet mullir, yet it is the exact word a Spanish speaker uses for that one fluffing gesture — and gardeners use it too, for loosening soil around a plant.

Note the irregular spelling: the stem ends in -ll-, so forms keep it (mullo, mulles, mullen) and the gerund is mullendo, not “mulliendo.” Handy neighbors from the same chore: sacudir (to dust, literally “to shake”), the trapo (cloth/rag) you dust with, and the alacena, the kitchen cupboard or pantry where dishes and food get put away.
