Mexican baseball Spanish is a recognizable mix of English loanwords inside Spanish syntax: bat, strike, home, out, hit, coach. Coaches shout “strike dos” (“strike two”), kids yell “jonrón” (the Spanish-spelled “home run”), and parents tell kids to “separa las manos del bat” (“spread your hands on the bat”). The English vocabulary stuck because professional Mexican baseball started in the 1920s under heavy American influence, especially in the Pacific Coast and Sonora.
