What does “uno” mean in “cuando uno aprende”?

Spanish often uses uno to mean people in general — the “you” that means “anyone.” Cuando uno está aprendiendo, siempre hay accidentes means “when you’re learning, there are always accidents,” about everyone, not one named person. English does this with “you” (or the formal “one”). A woman speaking about herself this way can say una instead. It’s a soft, relatable way to state a life-truth.
