What does “coger” mean in Spain?

In Spain, coger is one of the most common verbs you will hear. It means “to take,” “to grab,” “to catch,” or “to pick up.” You coges el autobús (take the bus), coges el móvil (pick up the phone), or coges un vestido (grab a dress). But be careful: in Mexico, Argentina, Uruguay and several other countries, coger is rude slang for sex. There, people say tomar or agarrar instead.

In this Spanish story, the line is Elisa coge el vestido (“Elisa picks up the dress”), the normal Spain use. If you travel in Latin America, swap it: agarrar el autobús (Argentina) or tomar el autobús (Mexico). Same idea, safer word.
