Bonjour or bonsoir? When do you switch in French?
In this children’s daily-routine clip, the little one says bonsoir before bed. Bonsoir means “good evening,” and French speakers switch from bonjour to bonsoir roughly in the late afternoon, around 6 p.m. Greet someone in the evening with bonjour and it sounds slightly off, so this is a small but very real thing learners get wrong.
Watch the close cousins too: bonsoir greets someone in the evening, but to wish someone a nice evening as you leave you say bonne soirée, and bonne nuit is strictly for going to sleep. The clip is gentle A1 French, also full of daily-routine verbs like je me lève and je m’habille.
