What does “je ne suis pas du matin” mean in French?

French has no adjective for “morning person.” Instead it uses a possessive-sounding de: je ne suis pas du matin, literally “I am not of the morning.” The pattern says what you belong to rather than what you are, and it flips cleanly — je suis plutôt du soir is “I’m more of an evening person.” Say it and you have described your whole body clock in five words.

The same être + du frame labels habits and allegiances alike. The speaker follows it with the giveaways: je retarde le réveil jusqu’au dernier moment (“I put off the alarm until the last possible moment”) and je ne petit-déjeune jamais — note that French turns petit-déjeuner into a verb without blinking, so “I never eat breakfast” needs no extra noun.
