What is the difference between “neuf” and “nouveau” in French?

French has two words for “new,” and the split is about freshness, not newness. Neuf (feminine neuve) means never-used — straight from the shop, still in the box. Nouveau/nouvelle means the latest one, the one that replaces what came before. So a voiture neuve has zero kilometres, while your nouvelle voiture is simply new to you — it can be second-hand and still nouvelle.

A quick test: ask whether you mean “never used” or “the latest.” A nouvel album is the artist’s newest release; the discs themselves are neufs only if shrink-wrapped. One firm rule from the clip: neuf describes objects only, never people or living things — you can’t be neuf, but you can be the nouveau président or a nouveau membre. Placement also shifts: neuf follows the noun (des chaussures neuves), while nouveau precedes it (le nouveau maire). Both descend from Latin novus, but everyday French keeps them in separate lanes.
