What does “normalement” mean in French?
Normalement looks like “normally”, and it can still report a habit. In conversation, though, it far more often hedges: “in principle, unless something goes wrong.” Ask a café when they open and normalement, neuf heures et demie means “half nine — that’s the plan,” not “that’s our usual time.” Hearing it as a habit rather than an expectation is what makes French answers sound vaguer than they are.
En principe is its slightly more formal twin and hedges the same way. When you genuinely mean “usually”, reach for d’habitude or en général instead: d’habitude, j’ouvre à neuf heures.
