What does “จาน (jaan)” mean in Thai?

A plate; by extension a 'dish' of food; the counter-word for plates
On MasterChef Thailand, the prize the cooks chase is จานที่ดีที่สุด, “the best จาน.” A จาน (jaan) is literally a plate, but Thai stretches it to mean a whole “dish” or course of food, exactly like English “a great dish.” So จานที่ดีที่สุด is at once “the best plate” and “the best dish.”
จาน is also a classifier, the little counting word Thai places after a number: ข้าวสองจาน (khâao sǎawng jaan) is “two plates of rice.” Thai counts almost everything with these counters, and food is usually counted by its serving vessel, จาน for plated dishes and ชาม (chaam) for bowls. Catch จาน and you can both compliment a cook and order a second helping.
