What is the difference between играть в and играть на in Russian?

играть в / играть на (igrat' v / igrat' na)
Russian preposition switch
“play” with sports normally takes в; “play” with instruments takes на

Russian uses one verb — играть — for both kicking a ball and strumming a guitar, but the preposition flips depending on what you play. Sports and games normally take играть в (with the accusative): играть в футбол, играть в теннис. Instruments take играть на (with the prepositional): играть на гитаре, играть на скрипке. Miss that switch and you will forever be “playing in guitar.”

The logic follows the prepositions' core meanings: в points you into a game or contest; на places you on or at an instrument. The prepositional ending also changes the noun: гитарагитаре, скрипкаскрипке. One exception to memorise: фортепиано (grand piano) is an indeclinable loanword, so it stays unchanged — играть на фортепиано, never на фортепиане. In the clip, the teacher writes both columns on the board side by side, making the split pattern impossible to unsee.
