What is the difference between НСВ and СВ in Russian?
Russian verbs come in pairs: НСВ (несовершенный вид, imperfective) for ongoing or habitual actions, and СВ (совершенный вид, perfective) for completed ones. The same verb root does both: писала (was writing / used to write) is НСВ; написала (wrote, finished) is СВ. Mixing them up is one of the most common mistakes in Russian — and learning to hear the difference is the turning point for most learners.
The clip makes the contrast audible in the clearest way possible: a teacher narrates her morning routine entirely in the perfective past — встала, открыла, написала, пошла — then challenges learners to retell the same story in the imperfective present: встаю, открываю, пишу, иду. Same verbs, same events, different aspect — one story is “what I did this morning,” the other is “what I do every morning.” The teacher explicitly labels the exercise: “Используйте НСВ, имперфекты.” Hearing both versions back-to-back is the fastest way to feel why aspect matters before memorising the rules.
