What does “и тебя тоже” mean in Russian?
When a Russian speaker wishes you luck or says Happy New Year, you can echo it back with a short phrase — but the pronoun form shifts depending on the hidden verb. И тебя тоже (Accusative) echoes поздравлять (to congratulate), while и тебе тоже (Dative) echoes желать (to wish). Russian compresses the whole sentence into that one pronoun form, so the case carries all the grammar.
The pattern works across four situations: С Новым годом! → Спасибо, и тебя! (Accusative — short for поздравляю тебя). Удачи! → Спасибо, и тебе! (Dative — short for желаю тебе удачи). Ты отлично выглядишь! → Спасибо, ты тоже (Nominative — the subject stays the subject). У тебя красивое платье! → И у тебя! (the whole prepositional phrase repeats unchanged). Once you see the rule — echo whatever case the full sentence would use — every reciprocal reply in Russian falls into place.
