What does “помочь” mean and why does it take the dative?

Помочь (“to help”) is one of Russian’s clearest dative triggers. Whenever you help someone, that person must be in the dative case — you answer the question кому? (“to whom?”). So it’s not вы but вам, not ты but тебе. Locking this in early pays off fast: the dative is one of Russian’s most common cases, and «помочь» gives you an instant, everyday anchor for it.

The teacher drills both registers back-to-back: вам помочь? (formal/polite — addressing a stranger or customer) and тебе помочь? (informal — a friend or child). The pattern is identical in both; only the dative pronoun changes. The same rule holds for «помогать» (the imperfective twin): помогать другу (“to help a friend”), помогать маме (“to help mum”) — the noun shifts to the dative just as the pronoun does.
