What’s the difference between “mere” and “mereu” in Romanian?

Two Romanian words sit a hair’s breadth apart: mere (“apples,” the plural of măr) and mereu (“always”). The only audible difference is that extra stressed -u: mere lands its stress on the first syllable (MEH-re), while mereu pushes it onto the final diphthong (me-REH-oo). Miss that tail and “I always eat apples” collapses into nonsense — which is exactly why it’s a classic beginner listening trap.

The clip’s own example nails it: Mereu mănânc mere! — “I always eat apples!” — stacks both words in one breath so the contrast is impossible to miss. Măr (apple) is the singular; mere its irregular-looking but regular -e plural. Mereu is an adverb meaning always / constantly / forever (synonym totdeauna); its etymology is uncertain, possibly from a dialectal mere form of the verb merge, “to go.” Train your ear on the stressed ending and the pair stops fooling you.
