What does “mamão com açúcar” mean in Portuguese?

Mamão is papaya, a fixture of the Brazilian breakfast table, usually served in slices with a squeeze of lime or a spoonful of sugar. That image also gives Brazilian Portuguese one of its friendliest idioms: ser mamão com açúcar — “to be papaya with sugar” — meaning something is dead easy. A prova foi mamão com açúcar: the exam was a piece of cake.

The logic matches English “a piece of cake”: soft fruit, no effort, nothing to chew on. Brazilians reach for moleza (“softness”) or a flat é sopa for the same idea. Two things to keep straight: the fruit is mamão in Brazil but usually papaia in Portugal, and mamão verde — unripe green papaya — is a vegetable ingredient, not breakfast.
