What does the “-inho” ending do in Portuguese?

Portuguese stretches almost any noun into a softer, cuter version with the ending -inho (masculine) or -inha (feminine). Gato (“cat”) becomes gatinho (“kitten” or “sweet little cat”). Casa (“house”) becomes casinha (“cottage, little place”). Café turns into cafezinho (“a little coffee,” typical of Brazilian afternoon culture). The diminutive does not always mean smaller in size; it often just means warmer. Portuguese parents, lovers, and grandmothers reach for it constantly, and Brazilian Portuguese uses it even more freely than European Portuguese.
