What does “słuchawki” literally mean in Polish?

Polish headphones tell you what they’re for: słuchawki comes straight from słuchać, “to listen” — they’re literally “listening devices.” The clip makes the link explicit while teaching the four language skills: słuchać to są słuchawki — listening, that’s headphones. Spot the verb inside the noun once and a whole family of Polish “listening words” opens up from the same root.

The singular słuchawka is the telephone receiver — odebrać słuchawkę is to pick up the phone — and a doctor’s stethoscope is słuchawki lekarskie. Deeper in the family: słuch (the sense of hearing), posłuchaj! (listen!), przesłuchanie (an interrogation — an intense kind of listening). The other three skills in the clip work as roots too: czytać gives czytelnik (reader), pisać gives długopis (pen).
