What does “speelplaats” mean in Flemish?

Speelplaats is the Flemish and southern-Dutch word for a schoolyard or playground. South of the cultuurgrens (the language-feature border roughly along the great rivers), kids and adults say “op de speelplaats” without thinking. In northern Netherlands Dutch, speakers more often reach for schoolplein (school courtyard) for the schoolyard sense, and speeltuin for a public playground. The split is one of the small but reliable lexical tells that locates a southern speaker by ear.
