Why do Dutch -ing nouns usually take “de”?
In Dutch, choosing between de and het is notoriously unpredictable — but there is one ending you can lean on: nouns built with the productive -ing suffix regularly take de. Ask for the bill at a restaurant? De rekening. Looking for a place to live? De woning. The ending is a reliable guide — rarely any need to reach for the dictionary; just spot the -ing and reach for de.
The pattern works because -ing is a productive suffix that turns verbs into feminine nouns: wonen (to live) → woning (dwelling); rekenen (to calculate) → rekening (bill). Feminine nouns always take de in modern Dutch. The same logic gives you vergadering (meeting), opleiding (education/training), tekening (drawing), herinnering (memory), and hundreds more — all de-words on sight. Once you notice the suffix, the article resolves itself.
