What does “Reißverschluss” mean in German?

Reißen means to rip or pull; Verschluss means fastener or closure. Stack them together and you get Reißverschluss — a zipper, described by exactly what it does: a fastener you zip (literally “pull”) open. That single act of compounding captures how German turns verbs into vivid, descriptive nouns. Once you see the pattern, dozens of other compound nouns start to decode themselves the same way.
