What does “bűbájos” mean in Hungarian?

Bűbájos is the fairy-tale word for “enchanting.” Its core is báj, “charm, grace, allure”; add the adjective ending and you get bájos, “charming,” and reduplicate it into bűbájos for the heightened, magical kind of charm a sorceress or a storybook princess carries. The doubling is not random: bűbáj on its own once meant a magic spell, so the word literally fuses “spell” and “charm.”

The compound preserves an old folk-magic sense — a bűbájos in ethnographic texts was a charm-worker or village witch. In everyday modern Hungarian, though, bűbájos just means delightful and winsome, said of a child, a smile, or a cottage. Related: báj (charm), bájital (“charm-drink,” i.e. a love potion), and elbűvölő, another way to say “captivating.”
