What does “오빠 (oppa)” mean in Korean?

오빠 (oppa) literally means “older brother” — but only a woman or girl says it, and she uses it for far more than family. A boyfriend, an older male friend, a crush, a celebrity: any older guy she feels close to can be her 오빠. The tone does the work, so the same word can sound warm, cute, or openly flirty depending on how it’s said.

The clip nails it with the meme line “잘생기면 다 오빠야” — “if he’s handsome, he’s all oppa.” It’s a fandom in-joke that plays with the age rule: properly 오빠 is for an older male, but fans riff that a handsome enough guy gets called 오빠 regardless of age. Take it as playful exaggeration, not an actual rule — in normal use 오빠 still means an older male the speaker feels close to. Note the gender pairing: a woman says 오빠 to an older man, but a man says 형 (hyeong) to an older man. Drawing out a sweet “오빠~” is also classic 애교 (aegyo, acting cute) when she wants a favor.
