What does “mangione” mean in Italian?

Mangione means a big eater or glutton, and it shows off one of Italian’s handiest word-building tricks: the suffix -one, which super-sizes whatever it attaches to. Take the verb stem mangia- (“eat”), add -one, and you get “the one who eats a lot.” It’s affectionate-to-teasing rather than insulting — what you’d call a friend cheerfully working through a second helping of gelato.

That -one ending is a pattern worth owning: un libro (a book) → un librone (a big hefty book), una porta (a door) → un portone (a great main door). It also turns verbs into “the person who overdoes it”: dormire → dormiglione (“sleepyhead”), chiacchierare → chiacchierone (“chatterbox”). Note that -one nouns go masculine by default, even from a feminine base.
