What does “convivenza” mean in Italian?

Convivenza is the everyday Italian word for a couple living together unmarried — cohabitation, “moving in together.” It is the natural counterpart to matrimonio in any conversation about relationships, and the street question “matrimonio o convivenza?” is a clean way to hear it in the wild. Many answer “convivenza prima e magari dopo matrimonio” — live together first, maybe marry later — capturing a very common modern Italian path.
