Why is the Gazzetta dello Sport printed on pink paper?

la Gazzetta (rosa)
Italian cultural icon
Italy’s national sports daily, printed on unmistakable pink paper — for a thrifty reason.

La Gazzetta dello Sport is the pink newspaper of Italian sport — un quotidiano, a daily, and a national institution since 1896. It was not always pink: early issues were greenish, then yellow and white. From 1899 it switched to pink for a purely budget reason — that paper stock was cheaper. The cost-cutting accident became the brand, and today the Giro d’Italia leader still wears a pink jersey, the maglia rosa, in its honour.

Quotidiano (daily paper) literally means “daily,” from quotidianamente — useful beyond newspapers. The clip notes the price and date are always printed on the front page, a small habit of Italian print culture worth recognising when you pick one up at the edicola (newsstand).
