Why do Romans say “mojje” instead of “moglie”?

In this quick-fire correction clip, a word almost slips out as mojje before being caught — the Romanesco way of saying moglie, “wife.” In the Roman dialect, the standard Italian “-gli-” sound routinely softens into a simple “-j-” sound, so moglie becomes mojje, just as sveglia (alarm clock) becomes sveja and meglio (better) becomes mejo.

This “-gli- to -j-” shift is one of the most recognizable fingerprints of Romanesco, heard constantly in everyday Roman speech — dagli becomes daje, a word Romans also shout as encouragement, like “come on!” Spotting the pattern is a shortcut to understanding a lot of Roman dialect at once.
