What can you buy at an Italian “tabaccheria”?

A tabaccheria sounds like just a tobacconist, and the name (from tabacco) says so. In practice it is one of the most useful counters in Italian daily life: beyond cigarettes you buy bus tickets and travel passes, Gratta e Vinci scratch cards, lottery tickets, stamps, and chewing gum, and you can often pay utility bills and fines there too. The blue-and-white T sign marks one on nearly every street.

Knowing what a shop name actually covers saves a learner real confusion. Some Italian shop names hide their goods: an edicola is a newsstand, a ferramenta a hardware store, a merceria a haberdashery (buttons, thread, notions). The tabaccheria is the extreme case — its name advertises one product but its real job is to be the neighborhood’s all-purpose service window.
