What does “veloce” mean in Italian?

Veloce means fast or quick. Many Italian adjectives change their ending depending on who or what you describe: a man is lento (slow), a woman is lenta. But adjectives that end in -e, like veloce, keep one form for both. So a man is veloce and a woman is veloce too — no swap. The same pattern covers grande, felice, triste and difficile, which saves you a decision every time you use them.

In the clip the hosts first show the changing kind: “Io sono lenta con la a perché sono femmina. Matteo è lento con la o” — a woman says lenta, a man says lento. Then comes the rule, called an “ultima informazione da nerd”: “le parole che finiscono in e come veloce sono sempre uguali. Io sono veloce, Matteo è veloce.” Veloce comes from Latin velox (stem veloc-), the same root behind English “velocity.” Related forms worth knowing: velocità (speed) and velocemente (quickly). In the plural, these -e adjectives shift to -i for everyone: io sono veloce, but loro sono veloci.
