💡 Víš, že…?

Why does “bapak” mean both “father” and “you” in Indonesian?

bapak
Indonesian noun, both "father" and formal "you, sir"
The same word covers both a kinship term and the polite pronoun for an older man

Indonesian avoids the direct second-person pronoun kamu with anyone older. Instead, you call them by a kinship term: bapak (“father”) for an older man, ibu (“mother”) for an older woman, mas for a slightly older brother-figure. The kinship word doubles as the respect-pronoun.

This clip plays the ambiguity for laughs. A census worker asks “nama bapak siapa?” meaning “what’s your name, sir?” The respondent hears it as “what’s your father’s name?” and replies “Abdurrahman” (his actual father’s name). The misunderstanding circles for a few rounds until the man gives up with the perfectly Indonesian sigh-particle “ya udahlah” (“oh well, never mind”).
