What does “baruch Hashem” mean in Hebrew?

A quiet desert moment, one woman telling another she shines “like the moon,” lands on a phrase Israelis say a hundred times a day: «וברוך השם שעדיין יש» (“and thank God there’s still...”). ברוך השם (baruch Hashem) means “thank God” or “blessed be the Name.”

Religious and secular Israelis alike use it as conversational glue: ask someone מה שלומך? (“how are you?”) and the classic answer is “בסדר, ברוך השם” (“fine, thank God”). It softens good news and bad, and fills small silences. Hashem (“the Name”) is itself a reverent way to refer to God without saying it directly.
