What does the “-iya” ending mean in Hebrew?

Tali works בספרייה, “in a library” — and the word is a little machine: ספר (sefer), “book,” plus the ending ־ייה, which turns a thing into the place where it happens. Once you spot it, Israeli street signs open up: מאפייה is a bakery (from מאפה, “pastry”), פיצרייה a pizzeria, עירייה the city hall (from עיר, “city”). One suffix, a whole map.
