What does “yom shishi” mean in Hebrew?

Hebrew doesn’t name its weekdays — it numbers them. Sunday is יום ראשון, “day one,” because the Israeli week starts on Sunday, which makes Friday יום שישי, “the sixth day.” Only שבת (Shabbat) gets a real name. That’s why, in this story, the parents are at work and the kids at school on Friday morning: in Israel the weekend is Friday–Saturday, and the working week starts again on Sunday.

Friday itself splits in two: יום שישי morning is still a school and work half-day, and by afternoon the whole country winds down toward Friday-night dinner. The story says it plainly: אבל מחר שבת. בשבת כולם בבית — “but tomorrow is Shabbat. On Shabbat everyone is home,” eating, drinking, resting.
