How do you pronounce “sc” in Esperanto?
This clip’s tongue-twister — “Se sciuro scias, ĉu sciuroj scias same?” (“If a squirrel knows, do squirrels know the same?”) — packs two words with the same hidden trap: sc. Esperanto’s c is always pronounced “ts,” with no exceptions, so sc is never one sound — it’s s plus ts, both said in full. Scias is really “s-tsi-as,” not “shee-as.”
That rule is what makes Esperanto spelling fully predictable once you learn it: every letter always makes the same sound, so there are no silent letters and no digraphs pretending to be one sound. In sciuro scias, the cluster forces you to pronounce the s and the ts clearly and separately, back to back — there’s no shortcut, and no blending them into a single “sh.”
