💡 Víš, že…?

How do you say “multiply” and “divide” in Chinese?

乘以 / 除以 (chéng yǐ / chú yǐ)
Chinese arithmetic verbs
“multiply by” and “divide by” — the two math operations most learners miss

Most A1 learners pick up 加 (jiā) for addition and 减 (jiǎn) for subtraction quickly, because those characters are also everyday words (add, reduce). The harder pair is 乘以 (chéng yǐ), “multiply by,” and 除以 (chú yǐ), “divide by.” Chinese uses full two-character verbs where English says “times” and “divided by,” and the word order mirrors English: 3 乘以 4 等于 12 means 3 × 4 = 12.

The clip runs through a complete arithmetic set: 1 加 1 等于 2 → 2 减 1 等于 1 → 1 乘以 2 等于 2 → 2 除以 1 等于 2. 等于 (děngyú) ties all four operations together as “equals.” Once you know these verbs, you can narrate any calculator screen or price calculation in Mandarin — a surprisingly practical A1 win.
